The current global economic crisis and second wave of the pandemic has brought unemployment to an all time high. Many companies that have been affected by the volatile global economy are reducing staff or reducing hours in an attempt to keep the lights on. This includes not just office jobs but also manufacturing, automotive and mining jobs where product demand has dropped due to global lock downs. Tips to increase your value as an employee.

  • Keep up to date with the latest technologies and trends in your field – you could improve productivity and performance at work.
  • Take a few online courses to refresh your skills or learn something new that could benefit your position at work.
  • There are many webinars that have discussions about technologies and work-related topics.
  • Take advantage of any training courses your company might offer – the more you learn, the more versatile and valuable you become.
  • If you have extensive experience in your field, you could take on more responsibility and get involved in mentorship and training programmes for new staff. This makes your current role more comprehensive and shows your value.
  • If you aren’t doing what you studied, then it could be time to upskill your degree and refresh your skills in that field. Find ways to incorporate these skills into your current profession. If you find yourself in the unfortunate event that you are made redundant, you at least have your updated degree to fall back on.
