Almost a quarter of workers in Switzerland have more than one job, according to the findings from a survey of working life in the country compiled by PwC.

The lead author of the poll believes the rise in the number of people with more than one job is being fuelled by inflation driving up the costs of living, NZZ am Sonntag reports.

“The trend towards seeking additional income has probably picked up since the end of the Covid pandemic,” said PwC’s Tobias Sattler to the newspaper on Sunday. “Financial uncertainty has generally increased.”

The results of the PwC survey also revealed that 58% of respondents struggle to pay their bills at the end of the month, Swiss Info reports.

According to trade unions, the purchasing power of the majority of workers has fallen to concerning levels.

The 23% of respondents to the poll who signalled they hold more than one job is far higher than the 8% registered by the Federal Statistical Office in 2021.

However, this discrepancy can, in part, be attributed to a significant number of people being reluctant to declare unofficial second jobs, the NZZ am Sonntag report adds.

Furthermore, the Swiss Employers’ Association has challenged the idea that people in Switzerland require more than one job to be able to pay their bills.

A considerable number of workers take on additional roles to increase their skills, accelerate career development or set up their own businesses with a more stable income, according to a spokesperson for the Association, the Swiss Info report concludes.
